Magpies star April Brandley to take a break from netball to have her first baby
Netball star April Brandley is expecting her first child which means she needs to take a step back from the sport. The 29-year-old is 16 weeks' pregnant meaning she was expecting during the Netball World Cup.
Her baby is due in February and it is thought that she will miss next season - it is unclear if and when she will return to the sport.
The defender played against the Melbourne Vixens last weekend - a match that ended in a loss for the Magpies. The club say that she has been closely monitored by medical staff throughout this season.
She said: "I cannot thank the club enough for the past three years. This year especially has been so rewarding and I will miss being part of what they are beginning to create here at the Pies.
"However, looking ahead to next year, I'm excited to put my netball career on hold and focus my energy on becoming a mum.
"When or if I will return to netball is uncertain at this time, motherhood may get the better of me!"
Jane Woodlands-Thompson, Collingwood Magpies' general manager of women's sport, said: "As a foundation player, April has played a key part in the Magpies' journey and we thank her for the impact she has had on the club and the game at large.
"We wish her and her husband Jason all the best for their future endeavours."
