Houston Dash registered their first victory in four years over Portland Thorns FC with the only goal of the game to reach the final of the National Women’s Soccer League Challenge Cup.

Dash were the more dominant side in the first half, having more possession and creating more chances on goal.

Their best opportunity to go ahead came in the 34th minute as they earned themselves a corner. Kristie Mewis’ cross found its way to Rachel Daly, but her shot was blocked by Christine Sinclair.

Daly claimed handball but Sinclair insisted it hit off of her chest and the officials agreed.

Just six minutes later, Thorns' best chance of the half came as Sinclair found space in the box but her shot cleared the crossbar.

Thorns came out in the second half looking more threatening but Dash's defence held firm.

Morgan Weaver looked best up front for Thorns, particularly in the latter stages of the game, as she created a few chances but was unable to convert them.

And Dash's Nichelle Prince, who impressed all match, had a great strike in the 61st minute but Britt Eckerstrom made an amazing save to keep Dash out.

However just a few minutes later Dash’s patience paid off.

Mewis took a corner and Eckerstrom initially blocked Sophie Schmidt’s attempt on goal. But Daly got her head to the rebound to put Dash ahead.

Dash’s defence, in particular Katie Naughton, continued to keep Thorns at bay until the final whistle.

Chicago Red Stars play Sky Blue FC in the other semi-final later tonight.
