American UFC star Jorge Masvidal insists he wants his next fight to be a rematch against Kamaru Usman.

The 35 year-old succumbed to The Nigerian Nightmare over five rounds last weekend as he lost by unanimous decision at Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.

Masvidal only had six days to cut more than 20 pounds and prepare for the bout as he stepped in at late notice for Brazilian Gilbert Burns, who had to withdraw after testing positive for coronavirus.

The Florida-born fighter also lost his trainer and cornerman for the welterweight title bout after they tested positive for COVID-19 and could not fly out to the UAE.

And as a result of his poor preparation, Masvidal has his eyes firmly set on a rematch in the near future, rather than a potentially huge clash with Irish star Conor McGregor.

Speaking to ESPN, he said: "You could tell me that McGregor right now would make X, Y, Z dollars, the biggest pay-per-view event in history right, and I’m going to get paid forever.

"But I feel like I got compensated well enough now, that I keep making the right decisions that I’ve been doing, then this money is forever money.

"So it’s not about money. It’s about I want that damn belt and I’m stubborn. I know I’m better than Usman and I want to prove it. I want to fight again.

"I’m not going to take nothing from him. He won the first one. Let’s do it again. That’s it.

"After that, then we can start with whatever comes next after that, but Usman’s the thing that I want the most. The immediate rematch is Usman for me now."

Meanwhile, McGregor announced his retirement from UFC for a third time in four years last month.

And although some believe this is his final farewell, he is still being considered for some of the biggest fights out there including Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje and Nate Diaz.
